Mark Sylvester, Guitar
Mark teaches private lessons on guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin and bass guitar. Drawing on his diverse performance and compositional background in folk and world music, classical, jazz, rock, soul, bluegrass, blues, and musical theater, Mark offers his students a wide musical perspective and tailors lessons to match student interests. He works with students on music of their choosing to improve technique and develop an understanding of music theory, improvisation and composition.
Mark composes and performs instrumental guitar music. DC-area public radio listeners may have heard Mark's "Dance of the Misfits" on WAMU during talk shows and news breaks. Mark also performs as a singer/songwriter, as an accompanist, and as a member of several DC-area groups. Mark appears on numerous CDs, including two of his original music. American Gypsy (2003) is a collection of 15 original compositions for solo acoustic guitar, and New Music for Banjo (2009), winner the 2009 classical recording WAMMIE award, is a collection of original chamber music. Mark has also composed music for award-winning site-specific live theater productions.
